D.E. grids hold a coating of D.E. filter powder that captures fine debris as water passes through the filter. If a grid is torn, brittle, collapsed, or no longer sealing correctly, D.E. powder can return to the pool and filtration performance can drop.

Full Grids, Partial Grids & Complete Sets
Full grids make up most of the internal grid assembly, while a smaller partial grid completes the set on many traditional D.E. filters. If only one grid is damaged, a matching individual grid may be replaced. When several grids are old, stained, brittle, or torn, replacing the complete set can help restore even filtration.

Traditional D.E. Grids vs. Quad D.E. Elements

Signs Your D.E. Grids May Need Replacement
- D.E. powder is returning to the pool through the returns.
- One or more grids have visible tears, holes, cracks, or collapsed fabric.
- Filter pressure rises quickly again after backwashing or cleaning.
- Water clarity remains poor even after proper chemistry and filter maintenance.
- The manifold, standpipe seal, or related internal filter parts show damage.
D.E. Grid Maintenance
Backwash and recharge the filter according to the equipment manufacturer's instructions. Periodically open the filter, rinse the grid assembly, and inspect every grid, manifold, air relief component, and O-ring or gasket. For deep cleaning, use a compatible pool filter cleaner.

How do I know which D.E. grid size I need?
Check the filter model and total square-foot rating on the equipment label. Common traditional D.E. filter sizes include 36, 48, 60, and 72 sq ft.
Do I have to replace every grid at once?
No. A single damaged grid can often be replaced individually if the rest of the set is still in good condition. Older or heavily worn assemblies may benefit from a complete replacement set.
Can a D.E. filter operate without D.E. powder?
No. On traditional D.E. filters, the grids support the D.E. powder coating that performs the fine filtration.
Why is D.E. powder coming back into my pool?
Common causes include a torn grid, cracked manifold, damaged standpipe seal or O-ring, or another failed internal filter component.
Does a Pentair Quad D.E. filter use these grids?
No. Pentair Quad D.E. filters use cartridge-style D.E. elements, so those replacements belong with filter cartridges rather than traditional D.E. grids.
